Industry

Cosmetologists typically inspect and analyze hair, skin, and scalp to recommend treatment; discuss hairstyle options; wash, color, lighten, and condition hair; chemically change hair textures; cut, dry, and style hair; receive payments from clients; and clean and disinfect all tools and work areas. Those who own their own salons also often have managerial duties including hiring, supervising, and firing workers, keeping inventory records, ordering supplies, and advertising the business.

Jobs

Job opportunities for cosmetologists are projected to grow 13% by 2026, faster than the national average for all jobs. The average annual salary for a cosmetologist in Virginia is approximately $37,000, not including tips from customers or self-employed wages. A cosmetologist will be on their feet for most of the shift standing, bending, and raising their arms for extended periods of time.

What can you expect from the Cosmetology I & II courses?

While enrolled at Rowanty Technical Center, Cosmetology students will spend time in the classroom as well as the shop. First year students will spend a majority of the first semester in the classroom learning the basics of Cosmetology and shop safety. Students will be introduced to the shop, and will spend only some time there. The second semester is split between shop time and class time, with more focus on shop time.

Second year students will review shop safety at the beginning of the year and have a general review during the first few weeks of class. The course continues in advancement of the goal to sit for the state license exam. There is a mix of class and shop time throughout the year.

The Cosmetology program at Rowanty has special requirements related to attendance as it is governed by the Virgina Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) Board for Barbers and Cosmetology. DPOR requires that high school students must have 840 instructional hours over the two year period. As such, it is imperative that students strictly adhere to the attendance policy to ensure they have enough seat hours at the end of the program to qualify for the state license exam.
